Mogao Grottoes.

Dunhuang 2 days tour

Dunhuang, the oasis town in northwest China, a crucial junction of the Silk Road, has served as an information highway for both merchandise and ideas - religious, cultural and artistic. By the 4th century AD, the Silk Road had brought Dunhuang both commercial prosperity and a growing Buddhist community.

The Mogao Grottoes are filled with one of the most extensive and exquisite collections of Buddhist paintings and sculptures in the world.

Day 1: Mogao Grottoes, the Echoing-Sand Mountain, the Crescent Moon Lake.

Distance: 25 km southeast to Dunhuang.

Ticket: Mogao Grottoes: ¥180 including ¥20 for an English-speaking guide. ¥120 for the Echoing-Sand Mountain and the Crescent Moon Lake.

Echoing Sand Mountain gets its name from the musical sounds that the wind makes as people lows across the sands. Crescent Moon Lake is a natural spring measuring 250 meters by 50 meters, a beautifully quiet spot in the desert, un-dried up for centuries.

Day 2: Gobi desert, Yumen Pass, Yangguan Pass, Yardang landform (formed by wind erosion).

Distance:

Yumen Pass (the Jade Gate) is 101 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang. It’s a strategic pass on the ancient Silk Road, and used to be one of the two critical defensive passes protecting Dunhuang from invasion from the West about two thousand years ago.

Yangguan Pass, sits 75 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang, was a gateway to the Western Region and an important pass on the Silk Road. Its system of beacon towers and walls marked the western border of the Chinese Empire.

Yangguan has been ruined with great sections buried in the shifting sands. There are now hardly any walls in sight, with the only visible sections being the foundations of some of the walls. To the south, millions of pieces of broken tiles covers an area of twenty square kilometers, some of the last remaining evidence of civilization here.

Ticket: Yumen Pass: ¥40, Yangguan Pass: ¥50, Yardang landform: ¥70.

Prices:

1. Transportation fee for these 2 days is ¥1000.
2. Accommodation: 2 star hotel, ¥250 for one standard room per night.
